The 27th of October 2016 marked a very important day in the history of Smet UK Ltd. Not only did this day mark the official opening of Queen Mother Square, Poundbury, with the formal unveiling of a statue of H.M. Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, but also the inauguration of The Duchess of Cornwall Inn by T.R.H. The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.
Sculpted by internationally renowned sculptor Philip Jackson, the 9’6” tall bronze statue is a casting of H.M. Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. The Prince of Wales described the sculpture as a “fitting tribute to my darling Grandmother”.
The statue, which takes pride of place in Queen Mother Square, shows the Queen Mother at the age of 51, when she was widowed, although she did go on to live another 50 years.
After the unveiling ceremony in Queen Mother Square, T.R.H. The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall continued their way to the new inn which features a public house, restaurant and 20 guest rooms. It was named by The Prince of Wales to honour Her Royal Highness.
Besides the restaurant and the guest rooms, The Duchess of Cornwall Inn also features a Smet staircase. This masterpiece also featured in one of our previous blog posts where we addressed the more technical aspects of this staircase.
We, as a company, are delighted and honoured that the inn has incorporated one of our staircases. We are looking forward to 2017 already!
