A visit from H.R.H. Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall, you will agree, is something very special. This 1500 mm wide staircase is being installed in the newly build ‘Duchess of Cornwall’ Inn in Poundbury.
Poundbury is a new town on the outskirts of Dorchester, Dorset. It is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall and built according to the principles of H.R.H. Prince Charles. The interior design was coordinated by Harrison for the company Hall & Woodhouse, who will run the Inn. The brief was to create a traditional and new classical style, with period features.
This project brought many challenges, such as fulfilling the Client’s needs concerning the aesthetics and look, while still complying with the UK building regulations for commercial buildings. This also needed to happen within the approved budget and tight schedule.
The result is a curved staircase which is manufactured by Smet from solid French Oak with a stained and varnished finish. Special features are the stainless steel anti-slip strips, a fully finished underside of the staircase and hand carved newel posts.
